Battlefield 2042 Removes Russian Helicopter Reward After Ukraine Invasion

Battlefield 2042 released an unlocked skin for a Russian helicopter last week. It has been withdrawn due to the current situation in Ukraine.

One of Battlefield 2042's reward skins has been removed due to the continuing turmoil in Ukraine. Despite the fact that this is the game's first alteration in relation to current events, EA and developer DICE has updated and continue to update Battlefield 2042, even delaying the game's first season to allow for adjustments.

The short life of Battlefield 2042 has been marked by controversy and poor reviews from both fans and critics. Aside from the game's numerous bugs, many long-time Battlefield fans believe that much of the game's DNA has been sacrificed in favor of a more trend-chasing approach. The game's unlockable Specialist skins have attracted comparisons to other recent shooters like Fortnite and Warzone, with the most divisive being the cartoonish and tongue-in-cheek Santa-themed attire. Aside from these skins, players can obtain a variety of colorful cosmetics for vehicles utilized by both forces in the game, including the game's adversarial portrayal of Russia.

A fresh controversy has erupted amid Battlefield 2042's low player count and other issues: the inclusion of an unlocked WW1-themed cosmetic that can be applied to in-game Russian aircraft. The "Grin Reaper" skin was released last week as a prize for completing one of the game's Weekly Missions. This skin's inclusion appears to have been reconsidered by EA and DICE since a post from the Battlefield Direct Communication Twitter account says it will no longer be available to unlock "in light of recent events." The tweet makes no mention of whether or not the skin would be reintroduced to the game in the future.

Of course, this elimination brings up the embarrassing fact that Russia continues to play a significant part in the game. Players have the possibility to be involuntarily placed on the Russian side before each match, and the country takes on the role of oppressive military power. Because of the game's launch troubles, a petition for EA to offer refunds for Battlefield 2042 has already garnered traction.

While several players have requested that EA eliminate Russian involvement from Battlefield 2042, this appears to be unlikely. Although EA is likely more concerned with Battlefield 2042's flaws and troubles, the removal of this skin serves as a statement of the company's position on the Russia-Ukraine crisis. As other corporations have expressed solidarity with the people of Ukraine, EA has followed suit by removing this skin. The gaming world has taken notice, regardless of whether its removal has any impact on current events in Ukraine.
