People simply do not understand what it means to be difficult. For good reason, I see Dark Souls or Cuphead a lot. They are difficult games. Nope, it is the most difficult.
My selection has to be one of two games: Contra or Ghosts 'n Goblins
Ghosts 'n Goblins is a punishing game. You take on the role of Arthur, a knight tasked with rescuing a kidnapped princess. The story is pretty generic, but the gameplay is insanely difficult. Arthur is armored, but after being hit once by an enemy, he loses it and is only one hit away from death. Not only that, but you can not change the trajectory of your jump once you have made it, so you have to be sure of yourself with every jump or you will die. Finally, the icing on the cake is that you must beat the game twice in order to see the full ending. How absurd is that logic?
Contra is similar to Ghosts 'n Goblins in that if you get hit once, you die. It is a run-and-gun shooter that is notorious for being extremely difficult. The game usually only gives you three lives (unless you have a Konami code, which may or may not help you), demonstrating how difficult this bullet hell game is.
I am not sure which is more difficult, but I have yet to beat either of them.
