Is it possible for a new Minecraft server to be successful in 2022?

It would be hard for the following reasons:

  • Maintaining a Minecraft server to its full potential necessitates a significant financial investment with no immediate payoff (or profit at all; your server could fail)
  • The existing Minecraft servers have all of the multiplayer attention: they are good, they are not pay-to-win, they are stable, people already have all of their friends on them, and they are all different in their own ways.
  • Trying to come up with a way to make money can be difficult (and eventually you will need to unless you are able to support the server financially indefinitely)
  • You would have to come up with a truly unique concept; if you are constructing a conventional server with, say, minigames, there are dozens of other servers where everything is simply better (remember, you are 'competing' with people who work on Minecraft servers for a living).
  • You have no player base other than your buddies and yourself when you first start out. It is really discouraging to join a server with no other gamers online.
  • There is a lot of work to be done in advance: plugins, starting Staff Team members, maps, bespoke plugin development, and so on.

To summarize, in order for your Minecraft server to be successful, you will most likely need some prior experience, a large starting player base, and a large budget.
